Bio

Dr. Hyzy is a Professor of Medicine at the  University of Michigan and serves Medical Director of the Critical Care Medicine Unit at the University of Michigan Hospital. Dr. Hyzy is a graduate of Kenyon College and NYU School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Hyzy is an active clinician and researcher with over 160 peer review publications and serves as editor of a critical care textbook entitled “Evidence-Based Critical Care: A Case Study Approach published by Springer, whose third edition will be published in 2026, and contributes 14 topics on mechanical ventilation and respiratory support for the online medical reference UpToDate.

Dr. Hyzy’s research interests are in intensive care medicine the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, sepsis acute respiratory failure and ICU quality improvement. Currently he serves as the Project Director for the Great Lakes Clinical Center of NIH sponsored ARDS, Pneumonia and Sepsis (APS) Consortium.  Prior to that he was the Co-Principal Investigator of the University of Michigan Clinical Center for the NHLBI sponsored Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) Network.   He has been awarded the University of Michigan Dean’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in Clinical Medicine and the Public Service Award from the American Thoracic Society.
