Bio

I am a Research Fellow at the School of Nursing, working with Associate Professor Julia Slark (Head of School). I am currently project managing the New Zealand sites participating in the Quality in Acute Stroke Care (QASC) Australasia Study. This is a bi-national study lead by Professor Sandy Middleton from the Australian Catholic University. This project will use an external remote facilitation strategy to support Australian and New Zealand stroke units and stroke services to implement the Fever, Sugar and Swallow (FeSS) Protocols when caring for patients with acute stroke. This is especially important in rural and remote areas where patients are at increased risk for stroke. More hospitals using these evidence-based, guideline recommended FeSS Protocols will result in better patient outcomes after stroke.

I also work as a Nurse Senior Research Fellow at the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Auckland City Hospital where I completed my PhD investigating the avoidance of endotracheal suction in patients having planned cardiac surgery, and mechanically ventilated for less that 12 hours.

I have been involved with many local and international ICU studies, and have extensive experience of clinical research within Aotearoa New Zealand.

I have been the New Zealand representative for the Intensive Care Research Coordinator Group (IRCIG), a bi-national group of ICU research coordinators. The IRCIG is an endorsed working group of the Australia New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) Clinical Trials Group.

Additional research includes climate change both on health and the impact healthcare has upon Greenhouse Gas emissions. I am working with the School of Nursing and ANZICS sustainability leads.

I supervise Nursing students undertaking their Masters in Nursing.
