Bio

Dr. Anastasia (Annie) Newman, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, contributing to the Physiotherapy and Integrated Rehabilitation and Humanities programs. A clinically trained physiotherapist with over 15 years of experience in critical care, she also serves as a clinical instructor, teaching inspiratory muscle training (IMT) to graduate students.

Her research focuses on ICU rehabilitation and treatment fidelity. She is the lead author of a systematic review and meta-analysis on IMT in critically ill patients (PMID: 39924923), and co-author of a scoping review on treatment fidelity in ICU-based rehabilitation trials (PMID: 38265271).

Dr. Newman is a co-Principal Investigator on the CIHR-funded IMPROV pilot trial, evaluating IMT in patients receiving prolonged mechanical ventilation. She has led and contributed to several clinical research initiatives, including a pilot study on in-bed cycling post-cardiac surgery and the CYCLE research program led by Dr. Michelle Kho.
